STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT Behavior Guidelines The Theatre, Youth, and Education Center is dedicated to providing quality theatre and performance opportunities to children and youth of all abilities. To accomplish this goal, students are expected to follow the NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP Student Code of Conduct, (the UVU Code of Conduct (UVU Policy 541)) and the Student Code of Conduct from the student's school district at all times to promote a safe, fun, healthy, and respectful environment for all participants. Unacceptable behavior will result in corrective measures and may include removal of the student from the NOORDA SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM. As a NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP student, I will: General Have fun! Wear appropriate clothing to NOORDA SUMMER CAMP each day. (See dress code.) Participate in all activities, including warm ups, movement, drama, art, and voice. Be on time each day and ready to participate. Be a positive influence on those around me. Respect Be respectful and cooperative and contribute positively to the experience of fellow students. Be careful that my actions, behavior, and language do not hurt other students' feelings or hurt them physically in any way, intentionally or accidentally. Any physical interaction with fellow students during classroom acting work must be done carefully and with communication, and under the supervision and direction of the teachers. Show respect to all staff and teachers, and cooperate fully with their instructions and directions. Respect the values and beliefs of others. Never discriminate or harass anyone based on race, national origin, color, citizenship, religion, disability, genetic information, sex/gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected class. Personal Space and Property Be respectful of all UVU campus and NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP property, including props, costumes, and set pieces. Never take, mark, deface, or destroy NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP property, materials, or the personal property of others. Behavior I understand that the following acts are examples of conduct not allowed at NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP and that corrective action will be taken, up to and including removal from the NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP program, should I participate in these acts: name calling, shoving/pushing, damaging property, demeaning comments/gossiping, threatening, inappropriate touching or gesturing, sexual harassment, hitting/kicking, stealing, taunting/ridiculing, inappropriate language, fighting, gang related signs, gang related clothing, and other gang related affiliation, bullying, discrimination and harassment based on any protected class, and criminal activity. The above list is not exhaustive but instead illustrates examples of unacceptable conduct. I understand the corrective measures and discipline process listed on page 5 and know that I can be dismissed from the program should I violate the standards of conduct and NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP requirements. 7 Safety Be aware of my surroundings at all times. Pay attention to instructions and directions given by teachers. Stay with my assigned group. Immediately notify teachers of any safety concerns. Immediately report violations of the Student Code of Conduct to the teachers. Dress Code Students should always be clean in appearance and demonstrate proper hygiene. Students should always be able to comfortably move in their clothes. The NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP provides a t-shirt with registration, and it is highly encouraged that the provided t-shirt be worn as often as possible to help identify students in the program. Close toed shoes must be worn at all times; no flip flops or sandals. Class work includes use of movement, such as jumping, stretching, and dancing. Clothing that is districting in appearance must be avoided. No midriffs or spaghetti strap tank tops on either gender. Clothing must cover the body during movement exercises, including reaching both hands high above the head. Clothing that does not cover the stomach during such exercises should be avoided. Clothing that contains vulgar words, profane or obscene slogans and pictures, gang affiliations, or advertisements for alcohol, tobacco, and drugs are not permitted. Students who violate the dress code may be asked to call their parents for a change in clothing, or to be picked up early. Repeated violations may result in dismissal from the program. Unacceptable Behavior Disciplinary action may be taken as a result of any behavior that violates the Student Code of Conduct, is disruptive or violates the rights of others. The following are examples of unacceptable behavior and are subject to disciplinary action at NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP. Disciplinary actions include minimal to no participation in the performances and Show and Share. The behaviors below may result in immediate dismissal from the program and may not follow the corrective measures procedure outlined below. Be aware that defiant and/or disrespectful behavior toward any NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP staff member will not be tolerated and may result in corrective measures. Name calling Bullying Stealing Criminal Activity Threatening Fighting/Taunting/ridiculing Hitting/kicking Damaging property Inappropriate gesturing Shoving/pushing Inappropriate touching, private body parts or not Demeaning comments/gossiping Inappropriate language Discrimination/Harassment based on protected class (see UVU Policy 165) Accessing inappropriate electronic content Sexual Harassment/Sexual Misconduct (see UVU Policy 162) Failure to stay with assigned group, class, or partners 8 Corrective Measures and Discipline Discipline should not be confused with punishment. The goal of discipline is a self-regulated individual with mature attitudes and socially-acceptable standards of conduct. Corrective measures used will depend upon the nature of the behavior, the frequency, and the degree to which the student is willing to try to correct undesirable behavior. Disciplinary actions will normally begin at a minimal level and then proceed to more serious levels with the exception of serious violations of the Student Code of Conduct (see examples of unacceptable behavior above). Unacceptable behavior will result in corrective measures and may include a report to the student's school district. Corrective measures may include: 1. Verbal warning. 2. A second verbal warning will result in a written warning and parents will receive notification. 3. After two written warnings, a student and parent meeting with the Outreach Coordinator and/or the Program Director will be scheduled. 4. A written warning that happens after a parent meeting may result in the student's dismissal from UVU NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP. UVU NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP reserves the right to dismiss students from the program as needed, without following the above corrective action steps, to ensure a safe and respectful educational environment. Dismissal Appeal Process The following is the process for appeal of dismissals: • Because daily attendance is necessary for success, student appeals must submit written appeal within 12-24 hours from the notice of dismissal from the program. • The student must send an email to Andrew Stone, VP of Enrollment Management, andrew.stone@uvu.edu • In this email the student must clearly explain why he/she is appealing his/her dismissal o Why the student believes he/she should be readmitted o Address what he/she intends to do to change the behavior that merited dismissal The information provided in this email will be considered, a decision made, and the student and parent/guardian notified of the decision within 24-48 hours. One of the natural consequences for the student will be missing rehearsals, class work, and other important events during the time for which he/she is suspended/expelled and in the appeal process. If the appeal is denied and discipline sustained, no special consideration will be given for make-up work during this time. 9 HEALTH AND SAFETY Communicable Diseases For the health of all our participants, parents are required to notify the NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP (801)863-5079 or (801)863-5437 and email john.newman@uvu.edu of all communicable diseases your child may have contracted (i.e. chicken pox, head lice, pink eye, etc.). Specific information will be kept confidential, however, NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP must notify all participants of the situation. Medication The legal issues involved with students taking prescribed medication while at NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP prevent NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP staff from storing or distributing medications (including EpiPens). Please make arrangements for the student to schedule taking their medication before or after attending NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP. If your child requires medication during the program hours, please make arrangements with the staff so you can come and personally administer the medication to your child. Special Nutrition Needs and Allergies Please make sure that students are aware of their individual nutrition needs and allergies. Parents should inform NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP staff if needs are serious or the student needs dietary accommodations for any NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP provided food. Sick Students Students who arrive sick or begin to feel sick at any time during NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP will be asked to sit out of class under the watch of the NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP administrator until parents are able to pick up the student. Parents will be notified of their child's condition. First Aid/911 If a student is injured in any way while attending NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP, an incident report will be filled out and parents notified. In the event of a serious injury, 911 will be called, first aid will be administered, and parents will be notified immediately. NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP will not transport any student in a personal vehicle and will call an ambulance in the event of an emergency. NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP is not responsible for medical costs including hospital bills, ambulance fees, etc. related to injuries requiring special medical attention. Student Supervision Under no condition will students be allowed to wander off on their own on UVU campus during NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP program hours. Once the student is checked in to the program each day, he/she will be required to stay with the group to which he/she is assigned. Leaving the assigned group may result in dismissal from the program. If the student is considered missing, NOORDA THEATRE SUMMER CAMP staff will notify parents to come to campus to assist in the search of the missing student. Campus police will be notified and an incident report will be written and filed by UVU campus personnel. 10 ATTENDANCE AND TRANSPORTATION STANDARDS Attendance Students must be on time for daily roll call at 9:00 am each morning. Our ensemble-based program prepares undergraduatesfor the challenges of a professional career in performance, and includes intensive classes in acting technique, improvisation, movement, voice and speech, ensemble building, acting with the camera, the business of acting, as well as foundation courses in theater history and production. The faculty in the Department of Theater is composed of Tony nominees, Obie award winners, Fulbright scholars, professional actors, casting directors, and award-winning authors who bring their diverse experience and knowledge to our students and productions. The Department of Theater produces eight or nine shows annually directed by faculty, professional guest artists, and MFA directing candidates. Students train and perform in the new Leonard and Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts. Students will also have the opportunity to take summer intensives in stage combat, acting with the camera, and movement that are taught by professional guest artists in residence. We're also proud to announce that Brooklyn College and The Public Theater have created a new partnership that will allow our acting students to participate in a suite of activities. Students can take master classes taught by some of New York City's most renowned theater artists. After graduating from Brooklyn College, alums will be given the opportunity to receive additional training in internships and fellowships at The Public Theater. The most frequently asked question is, "What kind of work do your alums do after completing the BFA actor training program?" The answer is, you've already seen many of them without knowing it. They appear in New York and regional theater, at national and international festivals, in films, commercials, and on award-winning television programs such as Atlanta, House of Cards, Law & Order: SVU, The Deuce, Boardwalk Empire, Orange is the New Black, Outsiders, Chicago PD, 30 Rock, The Good Wife, Chicago Med, SWAT, Containment, Loudermilk, Underground, The Haunting of Hill House, and Blue Bloods. Our alumni are also working as teaching artists, and artistic leaders in established and new theater companies. Our students graduate from our program with the in-depth actor training and artistic entrepreneurship necessary for work in the professional industry ----UW;vthe;lrm I will be out of the office from Tuesday, February 18 through Friday, February 21.
